Soundcloud Artists’ Feature #001
Ambient|Downtempo|Experimental|Drone
Hello and welcome to the first issue of Cloudy And Pleasant. This page is a snapshot about great musicians and artists who enriched my musical world since I joined the community. I intend to make it a regular feature on my blog and I would be glad to receive comments, constructive criticism and suggestions.
So, what’s it all about?
When I discovered Soundcloud a few months ago and stretched out my feelers in this world, I expected nothing special. I was aware early on that most audio platforms were only an external storage bin, aimed especially for the commercial distribution of advertising.
The more I was surprised – no – overwhelmed by the high quality and diversity that I encountered at Soundcloud. Not only the members were active in the exchange of ideas, praise and criticism, even the overall design of the site was finally something that corresponded to the community of musicians. No advertising, no commerce, a clear and well designed interface, and the brilliant idea to show songs with a graphical envelope where you can leave timed comments. This has prompted my graphic designer’s heart to register.
Soon I found that it not only was a wonderful platform to showcase my own music, but that I was dealing with a very active and cooperative community. I quickly received praise and criticism, and my musical horizons expanded dramatically.
With this page I want to thank all the artists that have enriched my musical world in such a short time, and hope to give them another little bit more publicity. So if you yet don’t know Soundcloud, I strongly recommend to risk a glance into the accounts of the artists – they are worth every single note! And now, enjoy the show!

CRABNEBULA – Planetarium
Bri In The Sky, Preston, Britain (UK)
I think of Planetarium as a journey more than music. With few stops along to way there will probably be point where you drift off and its like there is a piano playing and the rest of the surroundings just fall into place. Its been describe a man playing a Piano and you watching as you look at the stars.

DAVID STEVENS – Ice
David Stevens, Watford, Britain (UK)
I create my own performance software using max/msp – mainly using layered looping, extreme time stretching and granulation. I perform on my own using bowed/struck metal and (more recently) flugel horn as my main sound sources. I also perform using other musicians as sound sources, generally in the Colourscape structure. Recently I’ve been combining my flugel/software work with Steve Lawson (@solobasssteve) who plays electric bass and looper, and Michael Ormiston (overtone singing, gongs, morin khuur). I’m interested in slowly evolving soundscapes, generally with a more tonal than noise feel to them, and the combination of slow sounds with live instrument performance.

JAMES McCALL – Light On A Lake – Two
James McCall, Cincinnati, United States
As James McCall, I need to create that place where the demand for percussive ‘hits’ or ‘beats’ or ”bang this” attention does not exist. ”I,” as another persona, (not public currently) had been engrossed with cut-up/chopped-up/glitched beats/beat/ ect. for long enough when ”Light On A Lake” revealed itself to me. This Creative Act said to me: ”Have your own,” ”Relax along with me,” ”Do your own thing, it’s OK, I’ll be here if you need me, but don’t feel you need to give me all of your attention.”
I loved it. Pure Ego-less. I could be tensed or bothered or anxious or whatever and turn to it and I would feel what I may. Left to be, as it were…no judgments no stereo-types…no need to ”get into it,” or ”feel it,” or anything else. At ease. I respect this. So now, I share it with You.

PUT BEYOND USE – Dust Floats In The Light
Gerard Lenaghan, Belfast, Britain (UK)
I have no interest in genre, too many rules seem to be involved and it seems stifling to produce something which adheres to a specific pattern. So, I do whatever comes to me and let it wander where it will.

SWALL – Out In Time
Saoirse Wall, Mayo, Ireland
I do sounds. I don’t think about what I want them to sound like, I just sit down, and do them. I do those muthas, and I do them good. Well, that last statement was a lie. I sit down, and spend a given amount of time on recording, and once I don’t feel like doing any more, the track is done. Whether it’s done, or not, if you get me.
I don’t know if I fit into a genre, I don’t know if I fit in on the site. [Yes, you absolutely do - the author]
